CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND DIAGRAMMING

AIM: To analyse public spaces

METHODOLOGY: Conducting a series of flash mobs in a given space and analyse the data with the help of diagrams.

SITE: M.G.F. METROPOLITAN MALL, M.G. ROAD, GURGAON

BASE MAP OF M.G.F. METROPOLITAN MALL, GURGAON
(SHOWING VEHICULAR MOVEMENT AND ACCESSIBILITY AREAS)

ANALYSIS:
The vehicular traffic collides with the pedestrian traffic coming down from the M.G. Road Metro Station.
The security checkpoint leading to the basement often causes chaos and traffic jams up to the main M.G. Road.
This is due to lack of a proper system of vehicular movement and an undefined entry to the mall.
MATERIALS

ANALYSIS:
The green areas are not adequately used by the public.
They are maintained by the mall authority, which claims it to be their private space and prohibits public use.
The muddy patch offers no use presently. Hence, most pedestrian traffic moves in the paved areas.
The guards don't allow people to use the green areas.
It's a space we paid for and we're not 'allowed' to claim it.
LEVELS

ANALYSIS:
The ramp is a convenient pathway for pedestrians to walk up to the mall.
The space between the two small green areas and the steps is tight and hinders pedestrian movement.

FLASH MOB: DRAW ME IN..
MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE: 6:00 - 6:15 P.M.

ANALYSIS:
The crowd gathered near the small green area due to having direct visual contact and presence of steps nearby. The presence of one particular flash mob member gathered a lot of attention in this tight space.
The larger green area attracted the crowd as it is visually connected to the mall and the main road both. People entering the mall observed the flash mob members and actively participated in the exercise.
Lack of proper seating and shaded areas makes this entire area feel uncomfortable.
This flash mob gave people a reason to be in a space they don't generally use.
FLASH MOB: DRAW ME IN..
HEAT DIAGRAM

ANALYSIS:
The red spirals indicate larger groups of people in these areas due to the presence of flash mob members and the quality of the space.
Although the space between one of the small green areas and the steps was immensely active; the other one was equally cold. This was due to visual disconnection and presence of fewer flash mob members.
